Here at LUMI, we love to shop vintage for many reasons: what’s not to love about discovering unique, quality pieces, often with a story, and at bargain prices? But, we also love to shop vintage because it nicely represents an idea we hold very dear to our hearts, the idea of “consuming less, but better.” And, what better way to do this, than to re-purchase a quality made item that already exists in the world.
So, on our last rainy Saturday afternoon in New York, we packed an umbrella into our Theodore messenger bag and jumped on to an L train, bound for Brooklyn. We had heard about two must-see vintage shops in Williamsburg, 10 Ft. Single by Stella Dallas and Narnia Vintage. If you love vintage as much as we do, these are two locations to put on your list, for your next visit to New York.

This is certainly NOT the case at 10 Ft. Single — the all Japanese staff have gone to great lengths to keep their massive inventory of mens- and womenswear carefully organized and conveniently color-coded. One could spend the entire day going through their eclectic collection, including everything from cowboy boots to Converse sneakers, and from Japanese souvenir jackets to vintage rock ‘n’ roll tees.

The selection is truly overwhelming, so plan to spend some time here. And, if you happen to have any vintage urges left unfulfilled, head next door to their home-ware and antique shop, Stella Dallas Living, which stocks everything from wool blankets to fabrics and antique Indian rugs.

Single nearly wiped out our vintage shopping budget, we had been told not to leave Brooklyn until we saw the selection at Narnia Vintage. And, we are very glad we didn’t miss out on this little vintage gem. Located at 672 Driggs Avenue, everything in this dreamy little shop is hand-selected by owner Molly Spaulding, who seems to have an uncanny ability to choose vintage pieces that don’t feel dated in any way.
And, while the selection can’t match 10 Ft. Single in terms of quantity, the quality is uniformly superb, especially the beautifully artful prints, which will give you an authentic boho chic look, with an extra helping of chic.
And, if you happen to visit Narnia on a Sunday afternoon, you can also enjoy shopping to live music, hosted in their back garden. Vintage shopping plus live music — we will most certainly be back, only next time on a Sunday!
