Announcing the opening of our fifth retail store, at the historic Bikini Berlin concept mall.
[/spb_text_block] [spb_text_block animation=”none” animation_delay=”0″ padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ width=”2/3″ el_position=”first last”]Our latest retail location officially opened for business on Saturday, 11 April. At the risk of sounding immodest, we really couldn’t be more thrilled with our new retail space, and wanted to take a moment to share some of the details about this unique location.
We are positioned on the west end of the mall, in the “Bikini Pool,” a 3200 square meter space on the ground floor, which features 20 mid-mall, modular boxes.
[/spb_text_block] [spb_text_block title=”The Bikini Box of Our Dreams” animation=”none” animation_delay=”0″ padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ width=”2/3″ el_position=”first last”]As soon as we saw these “Bikini Boxes,” with their minimalist, open-sided and untreated timber construction, we knew that we had found the perfect, raw space in which to build our signature Finnish forest of LUMI handbags.
And, what a build-out it was. We shipped out 25 boxes of material, as well as the equivalent of several birch trees, which our crack ground crew put together in a little over one week. The result: the Lumi Berlin Store, featuring all our core design pieces, including a full range of bags, shoes, wallets, belts, and other accessories, as well as scent products from our home line.

At the Modernist Heart of “Berliner Chic”
We knew that our new retail home in Berlin was located in a Grade II listed historical building. What we didn’t know was just how central the Bikini-Haus was to the historical development of Berlin fashion.
[/spb_text_block] [spb_text_block title=”A Post-War Symbol” animation=”none” animation_delay=”0″ padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ width=”2/3″ el_position=”first last”]First opened in 1957, what came to be known as the Bikini-Haus was part of an ensemble of five structures, designed by architects Paul Schwebes and Hans Schoszberger. Originally missing its third floor, which consisted of supporting columns that separated the top and bottom of the structure, the building was affectionately dubbed the Bikini-Haus by local residents.
[/spb_text_block] [spb_text_block animation=”none” animation_delay=”0″ padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ width=”2/3″ el_position=”first last”]The name was appropriate for another reason: many of the building’s first tenants were from the world of fashion, including the offices of West-Berlin’s leading fashion designers, Hans W. Claussen, Heinz Oestergaard, Uli Richter, Staebe-Seger, as well as the Women’s Outer-Wear Association.
[/spb_text_block] [spb_text_block animation=”none” animation_delay=”0″ padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”0″ width=”2/3″ el_position=”first”]During the post-war period, the fashion industry provided a major source of employment, as well as a much needed source of distraction, from the grim realities of reconstruction. In this sense, the Bikini-Haus became a powerful modernist symbol for this post-war push for reconstruction and renewal. This sentiment was clearly captured in Helmut Newton’s photograph for fashion magazine Constanze, for an article entitled, “Who makes German fashion?” The image shows the fashion leaders of the day, standing above the bombed-out Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in the foreground, a stark contrast to the clean, sleek lines of the Bikini-Haus in the background. Berlin’s fashionable future was here, for all to see.

The architects took considerable care in the restoration process, both to preserve the historic character of the original building, while also adding innovative new elements, including a mid-level garden terrace and roof deck. The result is nothing short of stunning.
We feel very fortunate, and inspired, to be able to participate, in our small way, in this rich history of architecture and fashion, reconstruction and renewal.
