The Supermarket Bag
It was inspired by a most inconsequential thing: a simple plastic bag with handles.
It was instantly appreciated by an aesthetically minded vanguard of unisex users, from architects to graphic designers.
It has been sold in some of the leading art and design shops on the planet, from the MoMA in New York to the Louisiana Museum in Denmark to the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, as well as regularly carried by retail giants, from Le Bon Marche in France to Isetan in Japan.
It is LUMI’s Supermarket Bag, which, over the years, has become one of our most recognized and best-selling handbag designs. On this, it’s twelfth anniversary, we wanted to take a moment and look back at the evolution of, what some have called, a modern design classic.

The Supermarket Bag that you see today is not exactly the same Supermarket bag that debuted in 2003. The original Supermarket Bag came in only one size, large, with the choice of either short or long handle. The initial design also lacked a lining, gusset or closure mechanism of any kind.
[/spb_text_block] [/spb_column] [spb_column width=”1/4″ el_position=”last”] [/spb_column] [spb_column width=”1/4″ el_position=”first”] [/spb_column] [spb_column width=”1/2″] [spb_text_block animation=”none” animation_delay=”0″ padding_vertical=”0″ padding_horizontal=”2″ width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]For better usability and durability, we added a gusset and two sets of exchangeable, snap-on handles in 2005, while the overall size was increased to better accommodate A4-size documents and laptops. A magnetic, snap closure was initially added that same year, although it was soon replaced by a weather-proof zipper closure, which remains in use to this day, as well as a colored lining for easy content visibility.
Additional sizes were introduced, starting in 2006, which steadily grew into a full-blown Supermarket Bag collection, with sizes ranging from XS to XXL, as well as small related accessories.

As part of our ongoing effort to use only the most sustainable materials, in 2009, we introduced the Supermarket Bag Eco and Naked lines, which feature 100% vegetable-tanned, chemical-free leather, custom developed in cooperation with our production partners in Portugal’s artisan leather industry.
Despite the design refinements, the new materials and sizes, the Supermarket Bag has remained true to its original design sensibility, combining simple, graphical aesthetics with functional, roomy volumes. Simply put, these bags include everything you need: nothing more, nothing less.
